Jennie is an individual who exudes immense respect and enthusiasm for the creative endeavours of artists. She wholeheartedly dedicates herself to assisting artists in showcasing their talents and ensuring that their works receive the appreciation and recognition they deserve from a wider audience. During my art-filled journey in New Zealand, Jennie played an instrumental role in making it truly unforgettable. Her unwavering support and genuine friendship have made her a trustworthy companion. Jennie Hu is something of a cultural ambassador between China and Aotearoa New Zealand.  As a Chinese born New Zealand resident, Jennie is passionate about strengthening relationships between New Zealand and China through art and culture.  Jennie strategically and generously uses her networks and resources to create opportunities to expose New Zealand artists to China; and young Chinese artists to New Zealand. Over the last 10 years Jennie has created many opportunities for young artists to travel between China and New Zealand, to meet other artists, curators and collectors and for their work to be seen in a new culture and context.  In 2018 as Director of McCahon House I was Jennie’s guest in Shanghai and China Art Academy, Hangzhou. My interest specifically in travelling with Jennie was to explore possibilities for an artist residency for NZ artists in Shanghai… Since this time Jennie has established VUE (SH) artist residency for New Zealand artists commencing operations in 2019.  To have individual patrons creating projects and opportunities to further conversation between our two countries, and for the benefit of artists is a gift. I am pleased to count Jennie as my friend, and I look forward to ongoing collaborations with her.

  • Billy Apple In Shanghai China

We were delighted when Billy Apple was invited to be the inaugural artist for VUE Residence Shanghai. Over the 5 weeks Billy created a public art work for Yuyuan Road with a small local team and was also honoured by a conversation with Professor Jing Shijian at the China Academy of Art, Hangzhou. We had a rich and varied experience in Shanghai and were beautifully looked after by VUE’s director Jennie Hu.

  • Vincent Ward Artist

Jennie is one of the most creative and entrepreneurial arts patrons working in Australasia. She works extremely hard for the artists, institutions and gallerists that she collaborates with. And is one of the most open and intelligent collaborators that I have worked with, encouraging me to participate in the Shanghai Biennale in 2012. She can make the impossible possible.

  • I have known Jenni Hu for several years via the New Zealand scene. Through our mutual good friend and artist the late Billy Apple, I started conversing with Jenni in 2019 about the Vue Residency in Shanghai of which she is the New Zealand contact. Billy had been the most recent recipient of the Vue Residency, and he and his wife Mary had spoken very positively about the experience of working and living in Shanghai and of Jenni’s enthusiasm and professionalism throughout the negotiations and of the Residency itself. Covid-19 put a stop to anything happening at that time, but finally in March of 2023, Jenni and I started our formal discussions of how the Vue Residency may work for myself and my practise as an artist. Being a professional musician and composer, I did not fit the ‘traditional’ recipient role of the Vue Residency - all past recipients had been practising visual artists or film makers. However Jenni over a period of several months dedicated many hundreds of hours to finding a way to curate a programme of performances for myself and my band of musicians. She arranged performances at the China Shanghai international Arts Festival, plus arranged a series of workshops at the Xinghai Conservatory in Ghangzhou. She organised the all important Visas for the band, and was an incredibly dedicated host (and translator). My three weeks in Shanghai performing and meeting so many people via her extensive network was an amazing life-changing experience for me and for the band. All the performances and associated production were of a world class level, and our every need was catered for including five star accomodation, and all of our very specific performance requirements were met. Jenni was very dedicated in her role and accompanied us on all performances and workshops and tirelessly made sure we were able to perform to our usual standards in what was a whirlwind tour. In retrospect the whole experience was incredibly well organised and I am very much looking forward to returning to China to perform and collaborate with more Chinese artists and musicians in 2024.
